Unfair bank charges issue pushes current account investigation

The unfair bank charges issue has pushed for further investigation into other bank charges.

The Office of Fair Trading has announced it is to extend its investigations into the charges customers pay for personal banking services, in what began as a study into the fees that bank charges their customer for exceeding overdraft limits and bounced cheques.

An OFT spokesman told the BBC News that its investigation will be “the most wide-ranging study into personal banking to date,” and that it “will provide the necessary context for assessing the fairness of unauthorised overdraft and returned item charges before we apply the law in this area.”

It will emphasise that customers and banking providers are in a reciprocal relationship with mutual obligations.

The spokesman said that the OFT wants “greater transparency in what you get and what the charges are,” and hopes that their actions will encourage the public to become more aware of the issues around free banking bank charges and their own responsibility to stay within agreed limits.
